Do you "see" opportunity?

One of the most important entrepreneurial competencies I've ever run across (and made sure to develop in myself) is the ability to "see" opportunity where other businesspeople do not.
This competency separates the mildly successful from the wildly successful because it lets those who can "see" use money-making tools the "blind" can't use.
What do I mean when I say "see" opportunity? Let me give you an example. Let's say "Joe Average" writes a sales letter, mails it to a list and makes a little bit of money. He mails to more of the same, and gets the same result, and figures out if he mails X number of pieces, he'll make Y number of dollars. So he mails and makes some money, and he's happy.
Now, let's say Mr. X comes along and does the same thing and doesn't do quite as well, I just break even. But because I can "see opportunity" where Joe can't, I know how to turn a break even into a huge winner.
Here's what I "see:"
1. The opportunity to rent those names and make passive income
2. The opportunity to send those names to a tele-sales firm who
will sell them into high dollar coaching and send me a check for no work
3. The opportunity to add an expensive upsell to the original
piece, taking a break even mailing to a true winner
4. The opportunity to email to the customers I get, build a
relationship with them, then sell them products via email, where the cost per sale is zero.
5. The opportunity to joint venture to the people who buy from me
with tested, proven products and sales letter so I can make money without having to create anything
6. The opportunity to sell licensed products to these customers,
again making money with out having to create anything
7. The opportunity to put on a high dollar seminar where I can
engineer a "big payday," sell my own (and licensed) products from the front of the room, plus bring in speakers who can sell
8. The opportunity to create a continuity membership program where
I charge people's credit cards month in and month out for ongoing products and services
9. The opportunity to sell the whole business for a huge chunk of
change to a ready and willing buyer.
See the difference between "Joe Average" and me? All he sees is the opportunity to do more of the same and make a small amount of money, I see the opportunity to get more money out of the customer, and set myself up for life.
How did I get to where I can "see" opportunity? Education, plain and simple. This ability is developed by relentless reading, studying, testing, and doing. It's developed by talking with others who can "see" and doing what they do. It's developed by recognizing that it can be developed.
But the good news is, it's one of the most fun skills to develop.
