The highest paid profession

I believe it was Eugene Schwarz (author of Breakthrough
Advertising) who said that copywriting is the only profession where you can sit at a desk and make millions of dollars a year writing letters.
He'll get no disagreement from me on that one. One of the most valuable skills I ever developed was the ability to put words on paper that get people to give me money. It's a great skill to have... whenever I want money, I just write a letter and send it to the right people... pretty cool.
Anyways, today's question is about copywriting, in addition to Joint Ventures.

Hi Mr. X
This question is from a previous email! How would you know if the business owner has the right kind of list to joint venture with? Would I just call them up and ask them or would I get this info from a list broker.
One more question, I'm interested in writing my own copy. Can you tell me who has the best step by step on and offline copy writing course? I really like Gary Halbert's style of writing and Michael Fortin. Some one who has a good guarantee and not that expensive. Some one who shows u how to put a direct mail piece together for other clients.
Sorry for the long email
Thanks
Dwanell
Mr. X: Thanks for the great question, Dwanell. As far as knowing if the business owner has the right kind of list to JV to, you want to make sure that the product they're selling is similar to yours... you also want to make sure the customer you sell to is similar to theirs. For example, if you have an information product on making money, it makes no sense to Joint Venture with a business owner who sells cosmetics to housewives. You want someone who sells money making products to the same customer you do.
As far as your copywriting question goes, both Michael Fortin and Gary Halbert are great (I just saw Gary this past weekend) and I recommend you study them both. John Carlton is also one of my favorites (see www.marketingrebel.com ), and you should own everything every written on copywriting by Dan Kennedy, especially his Copywriting Seminar in a Box--see http://www.kimble-kennedy.com/copywriting-seminar-inabox.html
Now, there is one part of your question that concerns me greatly and that is the part about someone who has a "good guarantee and is inexpensive." Whenever I hear someone ask about a guarantee, they ALWAYS wind up asking for a refund, and quite frankly, I can't stand refunders. Why? Because the behavior of refunding is a commitment on the part of the refunder NOT to make the product work, and no one benefits.
I have a personal rule that I NEVER ask for a refund, no matter how bad the product because it forces me to find one good idea in every product... and the truth is, I've always been able to find one, even if the product stank. This has made me untold amounts of money in my career, money I never would have had if I had the refunder mentality.
As far as "inexpensive," getting cheap copywriting advice is like going to the discount heart surgeon, both are deadly, and cost you way more money in the long run than if you'd just "paid the best and cried once." In fact, paying too little for a product is actually bad for you because you place no value on it. If you invest in a product that is really a stretch for you to buy, you are much more liked to get value out of it because you have to.
As far as copywriting goes, you should get everything from Fortin, Halbert, Carlton, and Kennedy and study it religiously. Once you've developed the skill you'll never hurt for riches again... but don't be cheap on developing the skill.
Let's get to it...
