Where does the successful business owner go for answers?
I get a lot of questions along the lines of, "Mr. X, please tell me the exact offer to mail to the exact lists, how much money it will cost me, and how much of a response I will get."
Most people who ask this question usually don't like the answer I give them: "I have no idea how much of a response you'll get to a list, and I can't point out one super duper one that will make you rich overnight. You have to test, understanding that more lists will fail than succeed."
"But you're a rich direct marketer," they tell me, "don't you know?" The answer is I don't know for sure, and neither does any other successful direct marketer. But we realize the only people we have to turn to for answers are ourselves. I can tell someone what's worked in the past, and has a chance of working in the future, I can point people in the right direction, but I can't give you an exact formula with specific lists, offers, and response rates.
The reality is we take the sum total of our knowledge and past experience, then test different lists and media very carefully, analyze our results, then methodically expand our marketing as different forms of media prove themselves. Then we begin to build a comprehensive picture of what works in our own business, and then monitor new results for deviations.
In other words, we create our own answers because no one else knows them. The only thing we ask is the marketplace, because only the
marketplace can give you the true answers. We just make sure we
ask for cheap!
