How to get started

Probably the most frequent question I get is, "Mr. X, I've got all this information, but I just don't know how to get started. Please help me! How do I get started?
What I'm going to do is print a question that's similar to hundreds I receive, and then tell you... how to get started the "Mr. X way!"
Hi--
My name is Linda and I need your help. I'm a stay home mum of 3 (plus defacto) I have 2 ideas of things to market the problem is that I don't know where to begin, when I read how to patent or copyright them I get lost in the mumbo jumbo. I truly want to market these things but wont even tell anyone what they are in fear they will go do it before me. The ideas in my head but I don't know how to make it as it requires a few different fields of trade. Please help me to find my feet as I have no money to make to many mistakes. Thank you for your time I'm not looking for a handout but would love a nudge in the right direction.
Thanks again,
Linda
Mr. X: Thanks for the email, Linda. Let me first address the issue of product ideas, patents, etc. No matter the product idea you have in your head, I can go to any library, do a patent search, and come up with 27 variations of the thing you think you came up
with. Not only that, but almost every one of these guys has a
patented invention but no money or no customers. As I've written about before, the product is essentially irrelevant--it's sole purpose is to satisfy the emotional want of the customer. So, forget about products, and patents and focus on how to get customers.
Also, anything that has a patent on it usually involves manufacturing, and I can tell you from first hand experience, manufactured goods are nothing but a tremendous time and money suck. Information is much, much easier to sell and to deliver--all it consists of is words on paper and ink, or recorded onto cheap and easily duplicatable media such as a CD.
My advice to you is to spend some time in the library looking through the SRDS for hot markets that are purchasing information you're interested in. Then spend some time studying information marketing, learning how to write a sales letter that gets people to respond to you, learning how to build a relationship with your customers, then offering them more products. That's how you make money. Now, the best resource I've ever seen for understanding information marketing is a system put out by Dan Kennedy. I highly, highly recommend you get your hands on it, and read and study it over and over. You'll get 20 years of experience in just a few days. For more information check out:
