How I was shamed into wealth!
I remember it like it was yesterday. It was almost Christmas, and I was having lunch with a good friend of mine. He was very excited about the holiday season—he had lots of gifts to buy for lots of people, and I could tell he was really going to enjoy shopping for them this year. But what he was most proud of was the fact he was going to buy his mother a brand new car, the Cadillac she’d always dreamed about, but could never afford. He’d done so well in his business, in fact, that he was going to be able to pay cash for this shiny new car.
As often happens, he asked me what I was going to get my mother. I had nothing to say, because I knew I couldn’t afford much for her—my job didn’t pay much. There was a long, awkward pause before I finally manage to mumble that, “I was still looking.” Both he and I knew that wasn’t quite true—I had no money to get her anything, no matter how hard I looked. I was embarrassed, ashamed, and humiliated—and made a vow I would never have to say, “I can’t afford it,” ever again.
That one event was a turning point in my life—it literally shamed me into learning how to make money, and was the best thing that ever happened to me. Now, whenever my friend and I have lunch, we both talk equally about what we’re going to get for other people, the vacations we’re going to take, and the places we’re going to see.
While money isn’t everything, having money is much better than not having it—much better. So, if you’re not happy with your present income, if you feel ashamed around your more successful friends, neighbors and relatives, I urge you to have a look at
